Modulo Arithmetic

Modulo Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics which extends the idea of remainders which students learn about what dividing numbers. It is used every day when looking at a 12 hour clock and explains why 13:00 is the same as 1pm. It has really important applications, for example it is used in encryption, allowing messages to be sent securely.

This theme introduces the concept of modulo arithmetic and applying operations under modulo. We then look at Cayley Tables to represent these operations which allow us to explore the patterns in modulo which are particularly interesting for prime numbers. This leads to our last lesson where we see how modulo arithmetic is used for encryption.
