Inaugural East Maths Community maths challenge embraces county
BackOn Friday 6th December, the first coming together of secondary schools in the East Maths Community was held at the Inspiration Teaching School Hub in Norwich. Featuring 9 schools from across the community it was a fantastic opportunity for staff and students to come together to show off their new skills, as well as network and show the outcomes of delivery in their schools as part of the community.
The day had a full schedule including a Relay Race, Cipher Challenge, Eliminator Questions, Timestable Code, Padlock Challenge and the day culminated in a Practical Challenge putting students maths knowledge in context with a tricky problem to solve.
Students were very engaged all day, performing brilliantly under pressure and representing their schools with pride. Many students were working at levels that pushed their knowledge to the limit and introduced different ways to use the maths they were already familiar with.
The top three teams at the end of the day were:
1st East Point Academy |
2nd Cliff Park Ormiston Academy |
3rd Ormiston Denes Academy |
East Maths Community Lead, Tom Marjoram said:
“We had so much fun bringing our schools from the East Maths Community together. The enthusiasm from the students and excitement when competing in the maths challenges was exactly what we were hoping for. All of the schools were fantastic but a particular congratulations to East Point Academy on their victory, we are looking forward to next year already!"
East Maths Community hopes to create links across the county and bring fantastic maths teaching together for the betterment of teaching in our region. Delivering events like this is part of creating a community that works with each other and offers support where needed along the journey.
Providing events and resources is key to levelling up maths skills in the region, delivering sessions to support staff and students is only the start of the fantastic work in this project.
