In January this year, our schools paused to reflect, remember and learn, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Cromer Academy

This Holocaust Memorial Day, a series of slides were displayed on screens around Cromer Academy throughout the day, sharing facts and life stories linked to the holocaust, while pupils in history enrichment class learnt about Holocaust Memorial Day and looked at Holocaust memorial gardens and statues around the world. The class were then tasked with designing their own statues to commemorate the occasion.

Representatives from each year group of the school’s Student Council also planted a rose bush and erected a plaque in our school garden as a mark of respect to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2025.

East Point Academy

Faith Thomason and Piotr Paterek, representing East Point Academy in Lowestoft, read from a speech by Elie Wiesel and laid a wreath at the memorial plaque at Lowestoft rail station in commemoration.

Great Yarmouth Charter Academy

Great Yarmouth Charter Academy commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day with a poignant workshop and book fair providing students with a profound understanding of the Holocaust through various literature. The event featured readings of poetry, real-life stories, and fiction, allowing pupils to engage deeply with the historical and emotional aspects of this tragic period.

The academy is also planning an educational trip to Auschwitz in 2026, aiming to provide students with a firsthand experience of the historical site. This trip is expected to have a profound impact on the pupils, helping them to connect more deeply with the history they have studied.

Thetford Academy

All students at Thetford Academy had an assembly on week beginning 20th January delivered by the school’s Sixth Form Holocaust ambassadors where they covered the theme of a 'Better future'.
